On February 1, 2012, Israel Keyes kidnapped and killed 18-year-old Samantha Koenig before sewing her eyelids open for a “ransom” photo two weeks later. On February 1, 2012, Keyes kidnapped the teen from a coffee stand and told her that he was taking her for ransom money. Per Alaska Public Radio, Koenig attempted to flee but was instead forced into Keyes’ vehicle. As he drove off, Keyes realized that Koenig did not have her cell phone or debit card on her. He needed both to procure the ransom. On April 2, 2012, her remains were discovered at Matanuska Lake, off the Glenn Highway near Wasilla, Alaska. The autopsy revealed that she had been strangled and sexually assaulted. Her body had also been dismembered before being discarded through a hole cut into the frozen lake by the perpetrator. These details are being provided both to fully explain the courage and resolve Samantha displayed in the final hours of her life, as well as in the hopes that the release of additional details. Finally, on March 13, 2012, a vehicle matching the description was spotted in Lufkin, Texas, and inside it was Israel Keyes with a bunch of incriminating evidence , including Samantha’s phone and her ATM card. He was arrested and charged with her kidnapping, which resulted in her death. Israel Keyes kidnapped her at gunpoint to extort money. In disguise as a customer, Keyes kidnapped Samantha Koenig when she was alone. He demanded a ransom, but Samantha Koenig never made. FBI divers search Matanuska Lake in Anchorage for Samantha Koenig ’s body on April 2, 2012. Keyes was indicted on April 18, 2012, in connection with Koenig ’s murder. By the time he encountered Samantha Koenig , he claimed to have killed up to 10 individuals across multiple states, including Washington, New York, Vermont, and Florida. However, the murder of Samantha Koenig would mark Israel Keyes’s final victim — and it occurred right in his own neighborhood. Just twenty-one years old, Samantha was last seen working late at a coffee stand, a night that would forever change her family, friends, and community. In the blink of an eye, her absence painted a grim portrait of uncertainty, fear, and heartache.
