Interstate 15northbound is closed north of Charleston Boulevard Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023 , after two Nevada State Troopers were struck and killed while assisting a motorist. The deaths of two Nevada State Police Highway Patrol troopers on Thursday brings the total number of state police deaths to 12, with the most recent involving Trooper Micah May in an incident only about a mile away. Two Nevada Highway Patrol officers are dead and a suspect is in custody after a hit-and-run along Interstate 15 in the early hours of Thursday morning. Sergeant Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix were checking on a motorist who appeared to be sleeping on the shoulder of I-15 near D Street when a white, Chevy HHR struck the troopers before. The Nevada Office of Traffic Safety provides a monthly fatality report with breakdown by behavior, county and year-over-year change that includes monthly data, year to date data and data for the prior year. Of these 23 incidents , nine of them involved the death of a person resulting from police use of force, according to the report. 15 of them involved one or more serious injuries of a person. In May 2022, the Highway Patrol Southern Command had two fatal crashes that led to three deaths. In May 2023 , there were twelve crashes and 14 deaths.
